From Home Garden To Table: The Making Of Famous Malaysian Cuisine

Hosted by Suraya, The Malaysian French Chef

Bonjour Mesdames et Messieurs, a simple greeting from my favorite language, Français which is just me saying hello to you. I am a licensed Tour Guide specializing in French language and have been bringing tourists around Malaysia for the last 10 years. I realized that even something so common and so simple to us could be intriguing and mind boggling to others. That inspires me to share more about my culture, my country and even my day-to-day activities, because I really believe that cross culture and experience sharing could bring us together and appreciate each other better. Hope to meet you soon, virtually or even physically! Here are some backstories for you to know me better. I am Suraya, my loving mother was born in a Chinese family but was adopted by a Malay family from birth. My beloved late father was a Malay. I was born in Maran, Pahang but was raised in a settler's enclave in Jerantut where I received my earlier education. I then further my studies in the south of Peninsular Malaysia and that was when my 'travels' began. Life taught me to be independent, I went to France to further my studies (in Economics) and stayed there for 6 years. I came back to Malaysia and have been living nearby Kuala Lumpur ever since. I started my career as a Government Officer, before being seconded to a Paddy & Rice company. I was in charge of its investment in the Republic of Guinea, West Africa. After a few years, I have been assigned to look into the operation and sourcing of materials South East Asia. I finally took the decision to be a freelancer when my daughter was born. A decision I never regret! I soon became a tour guide in 2010. What I enjoy the most is reading and doing research. I am used to meeting a lot of people from various cultures and backgrounds. I discovered that getting to know each other's culture helped for a mutual respect and understanding. I could spend hours and hours exploring books, articles, magazines and old archive documents, but when I really need to let loose and relax, I also enjoy gardening, as it helps me 'to have my mind elsewhere'. What motivates me to continue in this industry are the curious souls around the world, always searching to enrich their understanding. I hope we can build a connection and really get to exchange ideas with your curious soul throughout our session together.

Grand merci !
