Temuan Village Trail With Native Guides

主办方 by Daniel Teoh Yong Liang (Native Discovery Sdn Bhd)

My name is Daniel Teoh. I am a Malaysian born Chinese and am the youngest among 4 childre... n. I was born in Penang Island, where I spent the first 19 years of my life before moving to the small town of Semenyih in Selangor for university. I graduated with a master’s in civil engineering from the University of Nottingham in 2018, I now live in Subang Jaya, which I fondly consider my second hometown. Having studied civil engineering, I briefly experienced the field as working in the MRT tunnels and as a building draftsman but soon found my calling elsewhere in the social sector. I am the founder of the social enterprise, Native, where we work together with Orang Asli (native people) communities to create wonderful experiences for travellers to enjoy. I love learning new things about the world through people, places, and media. You could say that I am a very curious person! I like to look for adventures in lesser-known places and frequently visit small towns, local markets, and festivals. I am passionate about helping others nurture their own curiosity through these types of experiences. My skillsets are a mystery, even to me! At the very least, I know I am entrepreneurial and a quick learner. With little resources, you can trust I will still find a way to make it happen. I believe that being clear about your purpose for doing something will always lend you the strength to overcome the toughest challenges. I want to find new avenues to share the experiences that Native has created with our Orang Asli partners. A lot of who I am today is because of the hospitality and generosity I have been shown by my Orang Asli friends, and I would like to give others the opportunity to experience it too. Being a host enables me to meet new people and exchange stories with them. I believe every time people exchange ideas and experiences; we grow. In a world where everyone is always trying to convince you of something, I offer you an immersive and unbiased first-hand encounter with the Orang Asli for you form your own thoughts about Malaysia's first people. I like it most when guests can gain new perspectives. It really means a lot to me when people appreciate the little things, they experience on our trips together. My greatest achievement was when we hosted our first experience as Native! I remember being so scared nobody would be interested when we put our first listing online. Little did I know we would be fully booked a few hours later! I am most proud of how my work has been able to positively impact my friend, Faizul, who was our first Native host in Kampung Sungai Lalang. He has done so much to make our experiences come to life. From thinking he was doing me a favour by agreeing to bring a bunch of strangers into the forest, he now loves hosting guests and actively organises his community to become involved in the work we do together. The community really looks up to him and thinks of him as their own self-starting entrepreneur, which I fully agree with! I am not a specialist in any one thing... but I have a broad area of knowledge and you can be sure I will keep up with almost any type of conversation. I am passionate about nurturing a world where every person is able to pursue their potential as people. This means making sure everyone has their basic needs met so they can have the room to dream big. I have been involved in building homes for the Orang Asli with an organisation called Epic Homes for the past 5 years. I have also tried my hand at climate change advocacy before returning to more grassroots work. In the same way I have had many opportunities in my life, I want to help others find their own path forward. 显示更多

我们都会干什么

A 50-minute drive away from the capital of Malaysia, travellers will be embarking on a 3-4 hour trail through the protected rainforests of the Orang Asli Temuan community. Our Orang Asli guides will be teaching us indigenous knowledge such as identifying local flora and fauna and how they fit into their culture.

As we are trekking through the tall, dense jungle, you can expect to learn about the existing rainforest species and relax by a cooling waterfall. At the end of the experience, we will then be given access to the local guide's home where we enjoy a post-hike homecooked lunch of Temuan dishes with his family.

If you are a traveller looking to travel with a purpose, we guarantee a fulfilling Native experience while benefiting the communities you visit.

More info about the community:

We will be visiting Kampung Sungai Lalang Bahru, a Temuan tribe settlement on the fringes of Selangor. The village is surrounded by forest reserves, picturesque hills and flowing rivers. Our journey starts at the village base; we will then move to the foothills of Hutan Sungai Tekala, where the locals wait to guide travellers deeper into the hills to relax by the river side and visit other sites of cultural significance to the Orang Asli.

Experience is available on every Sunday, we will meet at 6:30am at the meeting point and start our journey there!!!
